This is common in pregnancy, affecting approximately 56-72% of pregnant women. It may occur with or separately to low back pain. A small number of women experience PGP and\/or low back pain after having their baby. This may be a new or ongoing pain from the pregnancy.<\/p><p>PGP can be felt in the lower back, buttocks, hips, groin, inner\/ backs of the thighs. It is often felt during activities such as walking, climbing stairs, getting in\/out of bed and the car. It is not fully understood why some women experience PGP during pregnancy or after birth, but a strong link has been found between having PGP\/ low back pain outside of pregnancy and then having these pains in pregnancy. If you experienced PGP in previous pregnancies, you are more likely to experience it this pregnancy. Pain can also be affected by our mood, stress levels, state of anxiety, sleep quality and our satisfaction with work or family life.<\/p><p>PGP varies from person to person but if you are struggling to sleep, work and generally get about then seeing a specialist Pelvic Health physiotherapist can help to manage and improve your pain.<\/p><p>Here at Park Physiotherapy our <strong>Specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, Gemma Barnes BSc(Hons) MSc MCSP MPOGP, <\/strong>has many years of experience with this problem.<\/p><p>The first physiotherapy appointment will involve detailed questioning about your pain and all the possible factors that may be affecting it. Gemma will also make sure that you are suitable for physiotherapy and do not require any other medical assessment from your doctor or midwife. It is reported to occur in 14.8% of UK women. It can also occur in men with reported figures being 2-10% internationally. Pain may be felt in the lower tummy, the pubic bone, vagina, penis, anus, tail bone, lower back and buttocks.<\/p><p><strong>Pelvic pain<\/strong> may be associated with conditions such as:<\/p><ul><li>bladder pain syndrome,<\/li><li>interstitial cystitis,<\/li><li>IBS,<\/li><li>endometriosis,<\/li><li>vulvodynia or<\/li><li>chronic prostatitis.<\/li><\/ul><p>However, quite often a specific cause for pain is not found.<\/p><p>The Pain can be influenced by how the muscles, ligaments and joints around the pelvis are working. It can also be affected by our stress levels, anxiety, quality of sleep, diet, exercise, work satisfaction and our relationships with family and friends.<\/p><p>If you have had pelvic pain for more than 6 months, it is usually referred to as <strong>chronic or persistent pelvic pain<\/strong>. We advise that initially you are checked by your GP to make sure there is no specific medical condition that needs to be treated such as a bladder or bowel infection, problems with your prostate, the possibility of undiagnosed endometriosis. If this has been excluded, we recommend an appointment with a specialist Pelvic Health physiotherapist who is experienced in treating pelvic pain.<\/p><p><strong>Pelvic pain can be treated very effectively by physiotherapy. <\/strong><\/p><p>Treatment includes:<\/p><ul><li>making sure that the muscles, ligaments and joints in the pelvic area are working as well as possible (this may be through hands on treatment by your physiotherapist and\/or in the form of home exercises).<\/li><li>Understanding how pain works and your own personal factors that trigger your pain, making sure that
